On August 31, 2013 we saw Two high profile fighter go head to head with each other and we saw the lightweight title on the line when Benson Henderson took on Anthony Pettis.
In the co-main event of the evening it was Frank Mir vs Josh Barnett. this fight was thought to be a fight that hardcore fans wanted to see a couple of years ago but now we saw it today. During the first round Barett used the same game plan that Daniel Cormier used on Mir which was to grind him on the fence. after a couple minutes of that Barnett took advantages hit Mir with some shots, landed a knee on Mir's head, caused him to drop and the referee stopped the fight in the 1st round. Mir got up right away and it seemed very premature on the refs part.
On to the main event, this was a rematch of the Last WEC lightweight match and featured the showtime kick. Benson looked serious, he even braided his hair so it wont get in the way like it did in previous fights. for those who did not see the fight this was also a 1 round fight. Benson started off by trying to push Pettis against the cage and get a takedown. Pettis overcame Henderson attempt and got on his feet which he landed monster kicks to Benson's body. Toward the end of the round Benson got a takedown on Pettis but pettis got him position to get him in an armbar and he said I felt his arm snap and he tapped.
What's next for these fighters. Well for Barnett he should face a top level heavyweight. My guess would be Werdum if he doesn't get a title shot. For Mir there is a chance he might get cut but if that doesn't happen I would like to see him fight Roy Nelson if he loses to Cormier. For Benson I don't think he deserves a rematch so the fights that would make sense for him would be against Josh Thomson or T.J. Grant. As for Pettis, he won the belt and after his fight challenged Aldo title for title. I like that fight but it woud not be fair to the other title contenders at 145 or 155. so he can fight Aldo but if that doesn't happen I would like to see him fight T.J. Grant or Gilbert Melendez.
